    Women's use and abuse of the news media during the COVID-19 pandemic on Mumsnet.

    This article analyses news sources used by women to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic on the UK parenting website Mumsnet. By using a non-political online ‘third space’ aimed at women, Mumsnetters are able to avoid the aggression women face when they attempt to discuss news in the wider public sphere of the Internet. This third space can also act as a ‘trusted friend’, allowing women to access important news via a third party. Mumsnetters’ discussion of the news around COVID-19 complicates previous studies’ findings that women prefer to discuss news relating to health, education and the local community rather than politics and international affairs. Mumsnetters discuss the COVID-19 pandemic as both a health story and a political story. They use mainly digital journalism sources, either directly from the mainstream news media or indirectly via social media such as Twitter, thus participating in a hybrid media system. However, some Mumsnet discussants demonstrate a hostility and distrust towards mainstream news sources, even suggesting collusion between the media and the UK government, which has implications for the clear dissemination of government messages around the pandemic

    Saying the unsayable: the online expression of mothers' anger during a pandemic.

    This article investigates key triggers for mothers' anger during the COVID-19 pandemic and some of the positive and negative consequences of its expression online. It uses the UK online parenting forum Mumsnet as a research context and source of data. Our findings support previous research into mothers' anger during COVID-19 that suggests that the pandemic has both exacerbated longstanding sources of conflict and created new ones within their homes. This anger is frequently repressed because women need to continue to work and cohabit with the colleagues and family members who have caused this anger. However, we also identify a further trigger for mothers' anger – their frustration at the government's perceived inaction and mis- or even dis-information about the pandemic. This anger can be exacerbated by mainstream media reports and also the sharing of suspicions and complaints on online forums such as Mumsnet. Mumsnet therefore offers a safe space for the venting of women's anger during lockdown, but also a place where feelings of anger can be perpetuated and perhaps even aroused

    We consider a three-body one-dimensional Schr\"odinger operator with zero range potentials, which models a positive impurity with charge Îș>0\kappa > 0 interacting with an exciton. We study the existence of discrete eigenvalues as Îș\kappa is varied. On one hand, we show that for sufficiently small Îș\kappa there exists a unique bound state whose binding energy behaves like Îș4\kappa^4, and we explicitly compute its leading coefficient. On the other hand, if Îș\kappa is larger than some critical value then the system has no bound states

    AbstractHuman herpesvirus-6A and -6B uses the cellular receptor CD46 for fusion and infection of the host cell. The viral glycoprotein complex gH–gL from HHV-6A binds to the short consensus repeat 2 and 3 in CD46. Although all the major isoforms of CD46 bind the virus, certain isoforms may have higher affinity than others for the virus. Within recent years, elucidation of the viral complex has identified additional HHV-6A and -6B specific glycoproteins. Thus, gH–gL associates with a gQ1–gQ2 dimer to form a heterotetrameric complex. In addition, a novel complex consisting of gH–gL–gO has been described that does not bind CD46. Accumulating evidence suggests that an additional HHV-6A and -6B receptor exists. The previous simple picture of HHV-6A/B-host cell contact therefore includes more layers of complexities on both the viral and the host cell side of the interaction

    When do political parties prioritize labour?:Issue attention between party competition and interest group power

    This article analyses the conditions under which political parties pay attention to labour issues. It compares the dominant partisan perspective, which proposes that attention to issues is shaped by party competition, to an interest group perspective, which proposes that strong interest groups, in particular when their power is institutionalized in corporatist systems, can force parties to pay attention to their issue. We use the Comparative Agenda Project data set of election manifestos to examine these patterns in seven West European countries and corroborate our findings in the Comparative Manifesto Project data set for 25 countries. The evidence supports the interest group perspective over the partisan perspective. This shows that the study of party attention to issues should not isolate party competition from the influence of other political actors

    The Impact of Riser-induced Slugs on the Downstream Deoiling Efficiency

    In Oil and gas productions, the severe slug is an undesired flow regime due to the negative impact on the production rate and facility safety. This study examines the severe riser-induced slugs’ influence on a typical separation process, consisting of a 3-phase gravity separator physically linked to a deoiling hydrocyclone. Four inflow scenarios are compared: Uncontrolled, open-loop, feasible, and infeasible closed-loop anti-slug control, respectively. Three PID controllers’ coefficients are kept constant for all the tests: The separator pressure, water level, and hydrocyclone pressure-drop-ratio (PDR) controllers. The simulation results show that the separation efficiency is significantly larger in the closed-loop configuration, probably due to the larger production rates which provide a preferable operation condition for the hydrocyclone. It is concluded that both slug elimination approaches improve the separation efficiency consistency, but that the closed-loop control provides the best overall separation performance
